Objects that prison inmates keep in their cells reveal each prisoner’s unique identity in an environment that treats them as one and the same. Since photographing inmates’ faces is not allowed, Matan Bellemakers chooses to present their individual stories by exhibiting their material possessions.

“You have to be careful that you do not lose your identity in here because here you are a number. This is my way of keeping my identity. It’s a daily reminder of who I am, what I am and what I stand for." -an inmate
